Information for Prospective Members

Please find below the standard information for prospective members.

The best first step is one of the following…

1. Come along to one of our drop-ins every Friday at 6.30pm. It is a good idea to check with me first to confirm there is someone going.

2. We can have a friendly hit at a time of your convenience. I can answer any questions you may have about the club and recommend which would be the best starting division for you. If you would like to do this, give me an idea of times and days that would work for you and I’ll book us a court.

3. Give me an idea of your standard and I’ll pop you in the next league (starts 1st of every month). If the starting division is way out, we can adjust the following month.

Standard Information for Prospective Members

Thanks for your interest in Henley Squash Club! Let me first point you to our club website because there is lots of information there that may answer your questions.

Feel free to ask me if you have further questions, but here is a summary of information on the website:

For the Senior Club, I am your best contact. For Junior activities it is Paul Ski and for all coaching and lessons it is Adam Edge. All contact details on the Contact page of the website.

The main club activity is a monthly League. This is made up of divisions of five players each. You play everyone in your division during a calendar month – so approximately one match per week. At the end of the month, the top two get promoted one division and the bottom two go down one division. All standards are catered for. The League is hosted on the SquashLevels platform.

For more dedicated players we run teams in the Oxfordshire & Berkshire Leagues playing against other clubs on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7.10pm onwards. The home club provides an after match meal. Our meals are always in the Three Horseshoes pub on Reading Road. If you are interested in team squash, let me know and I’ll put you in touch with the appropriate captain.

All results (both internal League and matches against other clubs) are captured in the SquashLevels system. This is a great way to track your progress over time and also compare your standard against any other player in the world. It also provides lots of data like ‘most improved player over the last month’ etc.

The Club runs a number of championships and tournaments throughout the year – at least one of which is always a handicapped event – giving every member of the Club an equal chance of winning!

There is an active program of coaching and lessons for Juniors running every Sunday morning. Thanks to our sponsors, this is completely free.

There are two coaches affiliated to the club, who can provide lessons and coaching for all standards.

Our resident squash celebrity, Jill Campion (World, European, and British Master champion in her age category), provides regular ‘Women’s Squash’ taster sessions for all standards as part of her mission to encourage greater women’s participation in the sport. You can also find Jill’s contact details on the Coaching page of the club website.

There is a Squash Drop-In session every Friday at 6.30pm. This is open to members and non-members alike, so feel free to bring along friends/family/colleagues. Good idea to check with me first to make sure there are other people going (especially in the summer) – or join the dedicated WhatsApp group where people can confirm they are going on any particular Friday.

We have a number of people playing Racketball. This is played on a squash court but with a bigger, more bouncy ball and shorter rackets. Probably easier for beginners than squash. Also good for people worried about joint and tendon injuries – it is a bit gentler than squash. But the rallies are longer – so often it is a tougher cardio workout than squash. Check out the dedicated page of the club website for introductory videos about the game. We have a club ladder and a dedicated WhatsApp group to facilitate players arranging matches. To join the WhatsApp group, just send me an email.

To join the Squash League, just send me an email with your email address and telephone contact details and I’ll put you in the next starting League (starts the first of every calendar month). I normally suggest people try it for a month before formally joining the club.

Once you are sure you want to join the club, annual membership fees are £60 per year. The club year runs 1st June to 31st May. If you join part way through a club year, the fee is simply pro-rata’d.

Although you don’t have to be a member of the Leisure Centre to be a member of the Squash Club, it is recommended. There is some detail about Leisure Centre membership options on the Membership Costs and Benefits page. If you want full gym and pool access plus one free squash court a day, the recommended membership is Better Health Corporate UK – for which members of Henley Squash Club get a 10% discount. If you just want to book squash courts, the Pay-As-You-Go membership is the cheapest.

Feel free to ask if you have further questions.
