Support for the teams is always welcome. The 1st and 2nd teams play their home matches on Tuesday evenings, while the 3rd teams’ home fixtures are on Thursdays. All starting at 7.10pm at the Leisure Centre.

Week 5 – week commencing 5/10/26
Headline: All four Henley teams in action this week; Berkshire team looks dominant
Henley 1st Team were visiting bottom-of-the-table Witney, who so far have lost all their matches, gaining hardly any points. But for the visit of Henley they produced their strongest team of the season which led to a very tight match. Captain Harry Carr won 3-1 at 1st string and Harry Palfreyman continued to show good form with a 3-0 win. There were losses for club coach Adam Edge and Paul Ski, which meant the fixture came down to the 2nd string match. Monro Montanus had a tough five-game battle but eventually succumbed 11-4, 9-11, 11-6, 6-11, 7-11, and Witney just took the overall result. Next week Henley are at home against Hithercroft.

Henley 2nd Team got back on track with their first win of the season over Abingdon 4ths. The closest match of the night was the 3rd string battle, where Dan Andrews came from behind to win 11-15, 15-11, 11-15, 15-12, 15-12. There were 3-1 wins for skipper John Williams and Tim Budden at 1st and 2nd string; and 3-0 wins for James Rowson and Will Walker. All the matches had some close games, so the result was hard-fought, but in the end Henley produced a dominant 19-4 final score.

In a top-of-the-table clash Henley 3rd Team lost out to Abingdon 5ths. Henley’s sole win was Kevin James’ 3-0 victory at 5th string. In the 1st string match, Joe Edwards had a five-game see-saw battle, eventually losing 15-9, 11-15, 6-15, 15-13, 12-15; and Steve Dance added Henley’s sixth point. Peter Hopkins lost out to Max Booker, younger brother of our President, Roger. Miles Edwards had some very close game scores, losing out to Chloe Swart 12-15, 16-18, 16-18.

Henley Berkshire Team fielded a very strong line-up on paper, and so it proved to be, with all Henley players winning 3-0. Will Du’s match at 3rd string was the tightest, with game scores 15-13, 15-9, 16-14; the other matches were all comfortable wins, leaving Henley clear at the top of the divisional table. The team’s next match is away to Camberley on 21st October.

Week 4 – week commencing 28/9/26
Headline: Impressive victories for Henley teams
Henley 1st Team had their first win of the Winter season against a strong Brackley team, thanks to some outstanding individual performances. At 2nd string, Munro Montanus (SquashLevel 8,000) came back after losing the first game to beat Odharan Imlah (SquashLevel 12,700). Captain Harry Carr (SL 10,000) took a game off James Kettle (SL 13,500). Matt Marshall and Harry Palfreyman had fairly comfortable wins and club coach, Adam Edge, added two valuable points with a fighting five-game loss (10-12, 11-5, 11-8, 4-11, 12-14). Next match is against bottom club Witney, so could be a chance to make further progress in the division 1 table.

Henley 2nd Team had another bye this week, leaving them in 8th place of the divisional table. But they now have a run of three weeks without byes, giving them a chance to do some catching up.

Henley 3rd Team stormed to the top of their divisional table with a convincing 19-2 victory over Gladiators. Peter Rivers, Steve Dance and Miles Edwards all had good 3-0 wins. The top two seeds were pushed a bit harder – Tim Budden won 15-4, 13-15, 15-9, 15-9, while James Rowson came from behind to win 12-15, 15-11, 15-8, 15-2.

Position: 6th place in the 1st division (Oxfordshire)
Henley 2nd Team were at home to Spiceball last Tuesday. With no match for the 1st team, Paul Ski was available to play for the 2nds and he ran out winner (15-6, 13-15, 15-9, 15-13) in a fairly close match, which shows there is not a huge difference in standards between 5th string in division 1 and 1st string in division 4. James Rowson came from behind to win 10-15, 15-8, 15-13, 15-8 and Dan Andrews and Tom Tuite-Dalton both got points to give Henley a useful 8 points, even though Spiceball took the overall team result and now head the divisional table.

The Henley Berkshire Team got off to a winning start in their season opener. At 3rd string, Joe Edwards won a see-saw match 10-15, 15-7, 13-15, 15-13, 15-6, while Richard Little and Peter Rivers had slightly easier 3-1 victories. At 1st string, Will Walker added two valuable points in a close five-gamer 14-16, 15-12, 15-8, 11-15, 11-15 and Steve Dance added a point to bring Henley’s total (with the five-point bonus for an overall team win) to 17 – enough to take them to 2nd place in the divisional table. Everyone was pleased to be wearing their new team T-shirts – expertly organised by Steve Dance.

Week 2 – week commencing 14/9/26
Headline: Close matches for all three Henley teams in Oxfordshire League
Henley 1st Team had a real battle against University last Tuesday. At 1st string, captain Harry Carr played a blinder, by all accounts, taking down James McCouat (SquashLevel 11,500 versus Harry’s 9,500). Harry lost the first game before running out a winner (5-11, 11-3, 11-5, 11-3). “For about 10 points I was unplayable!”. At 2nd string Munro Montanus played despite being a bit poorly (“climbed out of a hospitable bed to play” according to the banter on the 1st team chat group) and was two games up before eventually being overhauled (14-12, 11-8, 5-11, 4-11, 8-11). Club coach, Adam Edge, had a win and Paul Ski added a valuable point. Despite the overall team loss, with all the points gained Henley actually went up one place in the division 1 table to 4th.

After a bye in the first week, Henley 2nd Team got their Winter campaign off to a start with a visit to Carterton. Despite wins from Joe Edwards (18-16, 11-15, 15-9, 9-15, 15-13) and Richard Little (15-13, 11-15, 15-8, 16-14), plus a point from skipper John Williams, Carterton took the overall team result. Next match is home against Spiceball on Tuesday evening.

At Henley Leisure Centre last Wednesday, Henley 3rd Team were also facing a Carterton team. Miles Edwards won out in a long five game battle (13-15, 15-5, 15-10, 12-15, 15-11) and Will Du won 3-0 after a very long 1st game (21-19, 15-9, 15-12). Peter Rivers and Peter Hopkins added valuable points, keeping Henley joint top of the disional table, but Carterton took the overall team win.

Week 1 – week commencing 7/9/26
Headline: Winter1 season kicks off – Henley are running 4 teams
Thanks to increased membership and an influx of players wanting to play team squash, Henley are running 4 teams this Winter – 3 in Oxfordshire and 1 in Berkshire.
There were individual wins for Harry Palfreyman and Andy Martin in Henley 1st Team‘s opening match of the Winter1 season against Abingdon. Young Polish Junior, Kacper Kwiecinski, was playing at 1st string for Abingdon and looked particularly strong. Henley were missing Munro Montanus – we wish him well for a speedy return to full health. Richard Brown added a point to keep the score respectable. This coming week the team are at home to University – so a chance to see them in action tomorrow evening at Henley Leisure Centre.

Henley 2nd Team are playing in division 4 this season, but had a bye in the first week. The Oxfordshire League has expanded from four to five divisions, compared to last Winter. So despite being division 4 champions last winter, the team find themselves in division 4 again, although they are joined by some teams who were in division 3 last winter. Hope that makes sense!

Henley 3rd Team got their season off to a winning start with a victory over Nuffield 2nd team. The match was poised at 2-2 when the 1st strings took to the court and Henley’s James Rowson prevailed (15-13, 9-15, 15-8, 15-12) to secure the overall team result. The other wins were for Peter Rivers and Miles Edwards with Richard Little and Jim Reay adding valuable points. Jim’s match, in particular, was tight, going to five games (15-13, 11-15, 9-15, 15-5, 7-15). This coming week the 3rds play at home on Wednesday. It is unusual to see Henley teams play home matches on a Wednesday, but I think this was done to avoid future clashes with Berkshire League matches.
