Henley Squash Welcomes Players of All Levels as Winter Leagues Begin

Henley Squash Club will compete this winter with three teams entered in Divisions 1, 3 and 4 of the Oxfordshire Squash Rackets Association (OSRA) leagues. This follows a productive summer that saw the club expand its competitive presence.

In the summer campaign, the 1st team, captained by Harry Carr, finished a strong second in Division 1 despite injuries and player absences. Carr himself made 13 appearances, alongside key contributions from Munro Simon Montanus (11) and Richard Brown (11).

The 2nd team (captained by Richard Little) and the 3rd team (captained by Steve Dance) competed in Division 3, finishing 6th and 4th respectively. The two teams were selected to be of equal strength, with players regularly rotated. Notable contributors included Joe Edwards (12), Peter Harrison (11), John Williams (11), Jim Reay (10), Peter Rivers (10), Duncan Nightingale (10), Peter Hopkins (10) and Steve Dance (10).

This was the first time in several years Henley entered three teams in the OSRA summer leagues, underlining the club’s growing strength.

The Winter 1 season kicks off with the 1st team away to Witney on Tuesday 9 September, while the 2nd team host Brackley and the 3rd team travel to Gladiators in Abingdon on Thursday 11 September.

Adding to the club’s recent successes, Jill Campion, multiple World, European and British Masters champion, won the 2025 European Masters Championships in Wroclaw, Poland, at the end of August. This was an especially notable achievement given her recovery from a serious knee injury earlier in the year.

Henley Squash Club, based at Gillotts Leisure Centre, runs competitive teams, a monthly box league, an “open to all” Friday club night, free junior squash sessions (both at weekends and in partnership with Gillotts School), and an annual handicap tournament. The club welcomes players of every standard — from beginners, returners, casual players through to experienced competitors.

The club’s activities are made possible by the support of local businesses and organisations including Zzoomm Broadband, Invesco, South Oxfordshire District Council, Henley Town Council, England Squash, Oxfordshire Squash Rackets Association, Mercers Solicitors, TMS3, GLL/Better and club members Tom Moore and Roger Booker.
