However, Weatherall came out firing for the start of the second and won the next three games fairly easily, with Varrie unable to put up much resistance.

At two, Harry Carr also lost the first game to the talented Robin Sparkes. Carr used the interval to focus and upped his intensity in the second game to also take the next three games, and the match 3/1. Sparkes put up a brave fight though and the match was closer than the score-line suggests, with a close tie break in the last game.

Simon Street started well at third string, taking the opening game without the loss of a point. However, Street felt ill from the start of the second and lost two quick games to Brookes’ latest recruit Yuan Hao Sum. Street managed to find some consistency in the last two games though and won fairly easily to take the match 3/2.

Nyall Driscoll returned at fourth string, having not played for Henley for a few months. Driscoll was far too good for his opponent Simon Pick and won comfortably 3/0, dropping just 7 points in the match.

At five, Stefan Stanton beat Jim Lynn, the Irish over 55’s number one, 3/0. Stanton was winning comfortably, when a loss of concentration in the third game resulted in Lynn taking 5 consecutive points to take the game to a tie break. Stanton managed to refocus and upped the tempo to take the final two points for his victory.

This result closes the gap at the top of the table, with Henley in third place but only trailing league leaders Abingdon by 7 points at the half way point.

Henley’s 2nd traveled to Abingdon to place Harwell in Div 2.

Andy Walters at 1, beat Gary Preston (3-1) and Terry Whiter at 4 beat James Henshaw (3-1). Both played well to win their games. Paul Sayers (2nd string), Derek Oswald (3rd string) and Roger Booker (5th string) all battled hard but all lost. This leaves Henley’s 2nd mid table at the half way point through the season.

Brackley made the long journey from Northamptonshire to play Henley 3rds. With home court advantage, Henley were hopeful of another victory to move them up their league. Unfortunately, Brackley fielded their strongest team of the season and Berger, Campion, Pullen, Ireland and Gildersleve all lost their respective matches. Overall, a disappointing evening for the Henley team.

Henley 4th team struggled for players this week but should now be back up to full strength for the rest of the season.

20/10/11 Redeption for 1st team against Oxford Brookes In the 7th round of Oxfordshire’s division 1, Henley first team redeemed last week’s poor performance with a 5/0 (19/4) whitewash of Oxford Brookes.

[3
