Unfortunately, a poor performance from Henley resulted in a 3/2 (16/10) loss, which resulted in a slip down the table.

At first string, an off form Rick Weatherall lost 3/0 to Paul Boyle. Weatherall did not perform to his normal high standard and looked to be struggling with fitness towards the end of each of the games.

At two, despite starting slowly, Luke Power beat Darren Withey fairly comfortably 3/1. Power’s superior fitness proved the key difference as Withey was unable to maintain his impressive start when under pressure.

A very sick Harry Carr played at three for Henley, merely to avoid penalties for withdrawing at the last minute. Against an opponent Carr would expect to beat comfortably, he took the opening two games off Oskan Musaka. However, Carr was unable to close out the match and wilted badly, losing the next three games and the match 3/2.

At fifth string Sam Carr beat Dan Ford 3/2. This match had many physically hard rallies and ebbed to and fro, however a relieved Carr managed to scrape the fifth game for the victory.

The deciding match saw Simon Street play Simon Martin at fourth string. Street started well and took the first two games for the loss of just four points. However, Martin resorted to gamesmanship from the start of the third game, as well as upping the physical battle. Street took a battering, both verbally and physically, and struggled to cope after taking a racket butt to the temple and duly lost the next three games.

This poor result leaves Henley in fourth place, as they take on Oxford Brookes next week, looking to climb back up the league.

In another disappointing match for the 2nds, only Nigel Richardson newly returned from injury could make any impact against the team from Paramount North Oxford.

Chris Wallace at 1st string played well against Robert Tomes but was handicappped by a heavy cold and could not last the distance losing 2/3.

Paul Sayers playing his normal unorthodox style looked to have the better of Aubrey Bell, but could not take the fifth, losing 2/3.

At third string Derek Oswald could not get going against Sam Cooper’s running game and despite some flashes of brilliance succumbed 0/3.

In the only bright spot of the evening Nigel Richardson made short work of Pete Ibson with his natural exuberant and running game winning 3/1.

The least said about Roger Booker’s performance against Gary Goymer the better and despite holding game point in the third game could not force the match to a fourth game with Booker losing 0/3.

Paramount 17 points Henley 7 points.

Henley 3rds made the short trip to Wallingford to play Hithercroft squash Club wining 3-2.

Chris Pullen was first up at 3rd string and despite using his tight serves to good effect in the 3rd game, ended up losing the match 3-1.

4th string Alan Smallman and 5th string Paul Ireland outclassed their respective opponents, both winning their matches 3-0.

1st string Terry Whiter lost to an in-form opponent who managed to retrieve even Whiter’s best efforts, Terry losing 3-1.

The result hinged on the result of the 2nd string match and Jill Campion did not disappoint, playing some of her best squash of the season to win an entertaining match 3-1.

Overall a well-earned win by Henley.

In division 7, a weakened Henley 4th team, fielding a number of new faces, hosted top-of-the table Banbury

The outstanding performance of the night was from Henley’s Rebecca Dixon, a highly promising junior making her first appearance for the senior teams at fifth string. Rebecca’s superb drives down the walls and into the corners were too much for Dave Kelly, who nevertheless did well to compete in the second and third games after losing the first game 9/0. But Rebecca ran out a comfortable 3/0 winner.

Henley’s other junior on the night, Jonathan Betts, bravely shouldered the responsibility of playing at 1st string and did well against a much more experienced Andrew Moody. Betts forced some long rallies and took a creditable number of points, but ultimately succumbed 3/0.

New face Jeremy ‘Jez’ Willis was a last minute stand-in at 4th string, but produced the most exciting match of the evening – eventually losing 3/2 in a see-saw match that saw him take the first and fourth games. Jez hadn’t played squash for a while, but this fired up his enthusiasm to re-join Henley’s internal box league!

Duncan Nightingale and Matt Blagg, playing at 2nd and 3rd string respectively, were comprehensively out-played by stronger opponents – but made up for it by doing all the marking!

Roger Booker, Trevor Cox and Tony Wheeler, all representatives of the Henley veterans team, represented Oxfordshire First Team over the weekend at Manchester in the intercounties Over 60s tournament first round.

Booker performed creditably at third string beating his opponents from Lancashire(3/2) and Durham and Cleveland (3/1) but could not beat the very strong Yorkshire man losing 0/3.

Tony Wheeler at second string lost both his matches(2/3) and (1/3) and Trevor Cox at second string won his only match against Durham and Cleveland (3/0).

Dave Sutlieff at first string the other representative from Oxforshire lost all his matches including a match against the Lancashire professional Moussa Helal who used to be an internationally ranked player and Oxfordshire finished third out of four in the first round and will probably maintain their position in the top tier with 17 points from the tie.

13/10/11 Rebecca Dixon stars for 4th team Rebecca Dixon had an outstanding debut for the Henley senior teams.

[3
