Henley 1st team out-gun Defence Academy<\/h2>\n

In the second week of the Oxfordshire Summer League, the Henley teams had mixed fortunes …<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Henley first team entertained Defence Academy from Shrivenham this week and won 5\/0 (19\/2). <\/p>\n

At first string Luke Power beat Nigel Rowe 3\/0. Rowe is training for a marathon and wasn’t moving as well as normal, enabling Power to capitalise when the rallies got tough. <\/p>\n

Simon Street beat Dave Ridgway comfortably at second string 3\/0. Street controlled the rallies well and took his chances, stopping Ridgway settling into the match. <\/p>\n

At three, Nyall Driscoll beat Antony Dennington 3\/1. Driscoll was always in control, but stopped concentrating in the third game and Dennington nicked a deserved game. <\/p>\n

Stefan Stanton beat Darren O’Sullivan 3\/0 at fourth string with O’Sullivan unable to live with Stanton’s attacking style. <\/p>\n

At fifth string Ed Hopkins returned to playing for Henley and did well to beat a tricky Mike Stannard 3\/1.<\/p>\n

After winning their opening match of the summer season, Henley 2nds travelled to Hithercroft to play their first team. Always a close encounter and this match was no exception.<\/p>\n

At one, Andy Walters beat Kevin Turnell (3-0).<\/p>\n

At two, Paul Sayers was unlucky to lose 3-1 to Mark Shand after staging an impressive comeback in the second game with Sayers confusing Shand by his unorthodox play. <\/p>\n

James Knight at 3 ran the socks off a very fit Alan Steptoe (winning 3-2). <\/p>\n

At fourth string Roger Booker lost to Carey Sayer (0-3). <\/p>\n

The match was decided at the fifth string when Henley’s Steve Berger eventually lost to Ian Sharps (3-2) \u2013 with Hithercroft taking the match 3-2.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For the thirds playing against Telecom, Witney, first string Jill Campion played Carey James. Campion found it hard to find her focus in the first game and was unable to apply much pressure. Her renowned determination returned in the first half of the second game and she began to skilfully out manoeuver James reaching 6\/0, to the great excitement of the Henley crowd. But at this point James changed strategy and came back to win the game 9\/7. The last game was over quickly, resulting in a 3\/0 win for James. <\/p>\n

Freddie Borg at fifth string put up a good fight against Tom Foggett playing some cracking lengths and deft touch shots, showing great promise. However, Foggett’s maturity, confidence and power gave him a strong edge and he won convincingly at 3\/0. <\/p>\n

Tim Budden at second string struggled to find his length against a determined Peter Walker, losing the first game 1\/9. Budden fought back in the second game moving his opponent around at a varying pace but Walker’s speed to the front of the court and his accurate drops ensured he went on to win the final two games. <\/p>\n

Despite a near 40 year age difference between Jonathan Betts and his wily Telecom opponent Bruce Anderson, Betts only dropped one game, controlling the match with hard drives,occasional drops and deft boasts. <\/p>\n

Paul Ireland had an impressive win over Ian Foggett with Ireland’s fitness being the deciding factor.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Playing away at Witney, Kristof Kunzmann made an impressive debut for the 4ths at 1st string, beating Stephen Thompson 3-1 by exploiting his greater mobility around the court. <\/p>\n

At 2nd string, Chris Pullen played some of his best squash of recent weeks to overcome Mark Wood 3-1 after losing the 1st game. Pullen’s pin-point high serves caused great frustration for his opponent. <\/p>\n

Unfortunately the other Henley players, James Gildersleve, Duncan Nightingale and Matt Blagg all went down rather tamely, so handing the fixture to Witney.<\/p>\n
