Fielding just four players and with Captain Street turning out to limit the penalties, Henley were merely attempting to get as many points as possible. In the end, they nearly beat a weakened Abingdon team, losing 3/2 (15/8).

At first string, in a match Henley had to win, Rick Weatherall narrowly lost 3/2 to Joe Brooke, the young England International. Brooke was struggling with cramp, but the stoppages seemed to affect Weatherall more as Brooke changed his tactics to win a close decider.

At two, Simon Street lost 3/0 to the talented Guy Tupper. Street played through illness, but narrowly lost the second game 11/9, his best chance to get a game.

At three, Stefan Stanton beat the petulant Tom Welstead 3/1. Stanton made hard work of it with a lot of loose play, but dug deep to take two of the games on a tiebreak.

In a game not for the purists, Damon Chase beat Gavin Collins 3/1. Neither of these two players possess a drop shot and hacked their way through a high tempo match, with Chase possessing the better temperament when the match got tight.

Henley conceded a walk over at fifth string and were duly penalised two points. However, this result consolidates their fourth place in the league.

Henley second team had a welcome much needed win against Harwell, winning 16 points to 6 and thus probably preserving their 2nd division status for another season.

At first string Nyall Driscoll was too good for the older Paul Bennett with Driscoll winning 3/0.

At second string, Paul Sayers struggled against the very consistent Gary Preston and despite playing his normal unorthodox game could not make any impression, losing 3/0.

James Knight’s running and retrieving eventually allowed him to overcome the new boy to the Harwell team Nick Piper 3/1.

Derek Oswald made short work of James Henshaw 3/0 and Steve Berger just managed to overcome Philip Thomas 3/2.

Henley 3rds had a rest week.

Henley 4ths were at home to Wallingford and turned in the stand-out result of the season so far – a 5/0 whitewash of the opposition and are now looking good to avoid the wooden spoon at the bottom of the Oxfordshire League!

At 1st string Alan Smallman and Jon Nichols fought a battle of varied serving, awkward return-of-serve, and fast/short rallies at the front of court. Smallman is the master of this type of play and ran out a 3/1 winner after narrowly losing the first game.

2nd string Tim Budden looked like he was going down in straight games against Charlie Stockings, but the tide turned in a tense third game which Budden took 10/8. Stockings was now tiring and started making mistakes that Budden skilfully punished, and he eventually won 3 games to 2.

Playing at 3rd string, Paul Ireland was up against Yvonne Boustouller in a repeat of the match they played when Wallingford were hosts. Once again, Ireland came out on top in a tight match featuring many requests for a let from the Wallingford player.

At 4th string, Jonathan Betts continues to improve with every appearance dispatching Emily Carr 3 games to 1. Carr would probably have won this match a few months ago, but while both players displayed beautiful classic drives, Betts is now spicing up his game with drop volleys and a lot of deception – and grew in confidence as the match progressed.

At 5th string, Duncan Nightingale had a comfortable (9/4, 9/2, 9/7) victory over Lisa Reade. Nightingale put it down to a new grip on his racket.

Henley Vets team consolidated third position in the Berkshire league with a home win over Hart of Fleet.

Jim Lynn had an emphatic win at 1st string 3/1, with Trevor Cox just squeaking a win at second string 3/2.

Steve Berger won a nailbiting match at third string, securing for Henley the win bonus, with Roger Booker and Chris Pullen at 4 and 5 both losing, disappointingly.

The Oxfordshire League Tables can be seen here.

The Berkshire Veterans League Tables can be picked up here.

15/03/12 Comprehensive win for 4th team In a better week for the Henley teams, the stand-out victory was by the 4th team

[3
