Match Reports for Henley Squash
Good week for 1st and 4th teams
Henley first team entertained Wallingford in a second versus third contest in Oxfordshire’s top division, with Henley keen to avenge their first half loss. The hosts fielded a strong team and managed to win 4/1 (16/8) to leap-frog their opponents, albeit Wallingford have a game in hand.
At first string Rick Weatherall lost 3/0 to seasoned professional Scott Handley, however the rest of the Henley team managed to win.
At two, Simon Street beat Ben Burbank 3/1 in a physically demanding match. After winning the crucial 3rd game in the tie break, Street took the final game 9/0 as Burbank accepted his fate.
At three, an off form Luke Power started slowly, losing the first game to the talented Steve Dodridge. Power managed to use his superior fitness to his advantage from the start of the second game and ran away with the next three games to win 3/1.
At four, Harry Carr’s continued squash rejuvenation after six months off skiing continued as he beat James Beer 3/1. Whilst not back to his former best, Carr managed to use his superior attacking game to good effect as he out volleyed his gutsy opponent.
Sam Carr was a late replacement at fifth string for Henley and did very well to beat Russell Roles 3/2, having not played for nine months. At two games up, Carr senior struggled to maintain his form as he tired, however he managed to regroup to win the deciding game and take the match 3/2.
Henley 2nds travelled to Abingdon and could only field a 4 man team. Paul Sayers at first string came up against the fit Andrew Smith and could not manage more than 2 games in a very tight match. James Knight as is becoming his normal custom frustrated his opponent Terry Dunwoody with his continuous returning of the ball from any part of the court and wore him down so that after Dunwoody had taken the first game he did not have the energy to take another one. Michael Swan made short work of Steve Berger 3/0. Roger Booker having dominated his opponent Andrew Cottrell in the 2nd game to draw level at 1-1 could not maintain the advantage losing 3/1. Henley 6 points, Abingdon 17 points.
Henley 3rds entertained Brackley 1sts and were overwhelmed, unsurprisingly. The first four players lost 3/0 with only Carl Ramsey being able to take consolation points for Henley winning 3/1 at 5th string.
Henley 4ths travelled to Hithercroft and totally dominated the match with Kristof Kunzmann beating Andy Blomfield 3/0, Fiona Dixon beating Phil Howard 3/0, Matthew Blagg beating Mike Hutchings 3/1 and James Gildersleve beating Gordon Graham 3/2 with Hithercroft being unable to field a 5th player the score finished Henley 19 points Hithercroft 3 points.
